Slash is the genre of fan fiction that depicts an erotic affair between two same sex characters. The term “slash” refers to the “/” sign that separates the characters’ names. For example, a Kirk/Spock fanfic depicts a love affair between Kirk and Spock of the Star Trek universe (as it happens, these were the very first “slash” fictions that popularised the term). A logical (hehe) presumption would be that these are written by and for gay men, but in reality, the primary “target audience” of slash fiction are female fans. I guess gay guys just prefer spanking it off to regular Internet gay porn.
Thanks for the good definition. Actually I think they’re written by women for women (that’s what wikipedia and other sites say). If you look at all the authors of both manga and anime based on yaoi themes, they are women. And the majority of fanfiction authors are women too. But the gay guys can celebrate because this sort of material should be right up their alley.
Um, you’re correct, that’s what I was originally trying to say, that slash fiction is mostly written by and for women – i guess I had a brain fart somewhere in the middle.
